Callaghan Very numerous: Dublin, N Leinster, Ulster, Connacht. However, O'Callaghan is more numerous still, particularly in Munster & Dublin. Originally a Cork sept and still well represented in W Cork. Ir. Ó Ceallacháin, from ceallach, recluse, hermit, or alternatively, it is an older name meaning "bright-headed". IF & GPN.
