Surname Dictionary

Mee fairly numerous: Galway-Mayo, Monaghan-Cavan-Louth etc. Ir. Ó Miadhaigh, from miadhach, honourable. Originally a sept of W Meath. In Monaghan, it may be an abbreviation of Mac Namee, q.v. It is also a Palatine name in Limerick. MIF.
Ó Miadhaigh Mee: cuíosach líonmhar: Gaillimh-Maigh Eo & Cabhán-Muineachán-Lú. B'as an Iar-Mhí dóibh, mar a bhfuil Cluain Uí Mhiadhaigh fós. I 1186, bhain Giolla-gan-mháthair Ó Miadhaigh an ceann den ionróir Hugh de Lacy - ós rud é gur díshealbhaíodh na Gaeil ar fud Cúige na Mí ag an am san, b'fhéidir go raibh cúis leis! An bhrí: uasal, macánta. MIF & SGG.
