Holley rare: E Ulster: Ir. Mac Cuilinn, formerly Mac Uighilin from Hugelin, diminutive of Hugh. Usually MacQuillan; a Welsh family who settled in Antrim in 13 cent. A case of mistranslation because cuileann means holly. See also Holly. MIF & SGG.
Holly Quite numerous: Kerry-Clare etc. Ir. Mac Cuilinn (cuileann, holly). Always associated with Kerry. There is another group in Antrim - see Holley. MIF.
Whooley Quite numerous: W Cork etc. Ir. Ó h-Uallaigh, uallach, proud. An agnomen adopted by some of the O'Driscolls of W Cork. SI.
