Ó Casáin Paterson: líonmhar i gConnachta. Saobh-aistriú ar "casán" = conair. Bhain an chlann sa le Uí Maine (Gaillimh). Brí cheart: cas = catach nó crom. I gCorcaigh, tá Cashman ar an sloinne seo agus i gCiarraí, Kissane.

Paterson Quite numerous: Belfast, Dublin etc. See Patterson.
Patterson Very numerous: all areas, especially Ulster. A common name in Scotland and England, "son of Patrick". In Connacht, it has been substituted for Ó Casáin (casán is Irish for "path", but no connection with the surname). SI.
