Surname Dictionary

Hamaltún Hamilton: an-líonmhar i gCúige Uladh agus suntasach i Laighin & Connachta. Albanaigh a bhí páirteach i bPlandáil Uladh - féach Manorhamilton, go bhfuil Cluainín air as Gaeilge. Aisteach go leor, tháinig an t-ainm as log-ainm Sasanach a thug Walter FitzGilbert leis go Lanarkshire agus a bhaist ar an mbaile mór annsan sa 14 céad. Tá muintir na h-Éireann an-bhródúil as Rowan Hamilton (1805-65), ceannródaí sa mhatamaitic sa 19 céad. SS.
Hamilton Very numerous: throughout Ulster, extending into Leinster and Connacht. An important Scottish name which came in the Plantation of Ulster, 17 cent. The town of Manorhamilton in Leitrim is indicative of their extensive holdings. The name sometimes stands for Hamill, q.v. The gaelicised version is Hamaltún. SI & IF.
Ó Hamailltín Hamilton: cuíosach annamh: an Clár. Is cosúil gur gaelú é seo - bhí iarthar an Chláir ina Ghaeltacht go dtí le déanaí.
