Cremins surname history

Cremin, together with its many variants Crimmins, Crimeen, Crimmeens etc, comes from the original Irish O Cruimin, and is found almost exculsively in west Munster, in counties Cork and Kerry. In the seventeenth century, significant numbers of the name are also recorded in the area of Co. Limerick adjoining Kerry.

Traditionally, the family were an offshoot of the MacCarthys of Munster; as late as the end of the nineteenth century Cremin and MacCarthy were used interchangeabley in the Bantry area of Cork.

Cornelius Cremin (1908-1987) was one of Ireland's most distinguished diplomats, with a career spanning more than five decades and including periods as ambassador to Germany, France and Britain.
