Scanlan numerous: Munster etc. Ir. Ó Scannláin, from dimin. of first name Scannal, meaning "contention". Woulfe lists families in Sligo, Galway, Cork, Fermanagh. See Scanlon.
Scanlon numerous (double that of Scanlan): all areas, especially N Munster and Connacht. Ir. Ó Scannláin, but Mac Scannláin in Oriel. The "-lon" spelling is plentiful in Connacht where it is a synonym of Scannell, q.v. IF.
