Gowan | Quite numerous: Belfast area, Cork, Dublin. Ir. Mac Gabhann (son of the smith). A sept of Cavan. There was also Ó Gabhann, from Down; all tend to be anglicised Smith but the form MacGowan, which is nearest the original, is still numerous. IF. |
