MacCue | fairly rare: Belfast area etc. Ir. Mac Aodha. A form of Mac Hugh in Ulster. It must be noted that the Teutonic Hugh bears no semantic relationship with Celtic Aodh. One was arbitrarily substituted for the other. |
MacHugh | Very numerous: all areas, especially Connacht & Ulster. Ir. Mac Aodha from early first name Aodh, "fire", now always anglicised Hugh. There were septs in Galway & Ulster. |
MacKew | rare: Armagh. Variant of Mac Hugh, q.v. |
