Bhí na tréithe sin i Liam Ó Ruanaigh (1873-1901) file a bhí chun tosaigh i ngluaiseacht na h-aithbheochana. Tugadh ó Maolruanaigh air, leis. An bhrí: ruanaidh = laoch, gaiscíoch, de réir an Duinnínigh.
Roney rare: Portadown (Armagh) etc. Ir. Ó Ruanaidh. See Rooney.
Rooney Very numerous: all areas except Munster. Ir. Ó Ruanaidh (perhaps from first name Ruadhán, red-haired one). A sept of Down, they enjoyed a literary reputation and were widespread in Leath Chuinn (the northern half). However, in W Ulster and N Connacht, it may be a version of Mulrooney, q.v. IF.
