Surname Dictionary

Maddens Very numerous: all areas, especially Connacht & Munster. Ir. Ó Madáin, Ó Maidín, perhaps from madadh, a dog. They were an important sept of Uí Maine (Galway). A similar English name exists and may account for some in Ulster and Leinster. See also Madigan. IF.
Madine Quite numerous: Down etc. Probably variant of Madden, q.v.
Ó Madaidhín Madden: an-líonmhar: Connachta & Mumhain go sonrach. Clann mhór de chuid Uí Maine - bhí siad i gceannas ar Síol Amnchadha sa cheantar ar a dtugtar Longfort taobh leis an Sionainn agus i Lusmágh, Uíbh Fhailí. Bhí leagan giorraithe Ó Madáin le fáil agus sé an litriú nua ná: Ó Maidín. Fréamh, b'fhéidir, madadh, madra. SGG & IF.
