Surname Dictionary

Loughery fairly rare: Derry etc. Ir. Ó Luachra. Woulfe quotes O'Donovan saying that it comes from luachán, white, pure, but luchair also means bright, radiant and seems more appropriate. The name is widespread in the forms Loughry and Rush (a mistranslation).
Loughrey numerous: Ulster, Sligo-Mayo etc. Ir. Ó Luachra, which has been turned into Rush because luachair means rushes (plants). For correct derivation see Loughery.
Ó Luachra Loughrey, Rushe: líonmhar: Cúige Uladh, Sligeach-Maigh Eo & rl. Bhí clann amháin ag Iascach, Sligeach; dealraíonn sé go raibh dream eile sa tuaisceart - Doire agus Aontroim - agus Ó Luatheirghigh orthu. Is cinnte gur deineadh Rush de chuid des na Connachtaigh - ar ndóigh, níl aon bhaint leis na plandaí réisc - ach le luachair a chiallaíonn geal, lonrach.
