Surname Dictionary

Hoey numerous: Ulster, N Leinster, Dublin etc. Ir. Ó h-Eochaidh, from first name Eochaidh, horseman. Were kings of E Ulster in 12 cent, also a sept of Meath. This name occurs as Keogh, Haughey and Hough. MacLysacht remarks that some Hoeys in Ulster are of planter stock, these are more properly Huey, q.v. IF, SI & SGG.
Huey Quite numerous: Ulster generally. Ir. Ó h-Eochaidh. See Hoey. MacLysacht points out that this is also a settler name derived from Hugh, so could be of Scottish or English origin. SI.
