Surname Dictionary

Harty numerous: all areas but mainly Munster, least in Ulster. Ir. Ó h-Athartaigh, (modern Ó h-Artaigh). Woulfe regards it a variant of Ó Fathartaigh (Faherty). MIF & SGG.
Hearty Quite numerous: Armagh-Down-Louth etc. Ir. Ó h-Aghartaigh. Woulfe equates it to Faghartach, a Galway name. In any case, Hearty was a sept of Oriel (Louth-Armagh). Not to be confused with Harty, q.v. SI & SGG.
Ó h-Aghartaigh Hearty: líon beag, i Lú den chuid is mó. Bhain riamh le Oirghialla. SI.
Ó h-Athartaigh Harty: líonmhar, C.Mumhan. Ceapann de Bhulbh go dtagann sé ón ainm Fathartach le séimhiú ar an "F". Féach Ó h-Artaigh thuas. MIF & SGG.
