Surname Dictionary

Garvey numerous: all areas: especially Connacht and N Munster. Ir. Ó Gairbhith, perhaps "rough peace". A number of families bore this name: (1) in Iveagh (Down); (2) in E Armagh; (3) a branch of Uí Cinnsealaigh in Carlow. It is used for Garvan in Munster and Garvin in Connacht. IF & SGG.
Mac Gairbheith Mac Garvey: líonmhar: Cúige Uladh & Sligeach. As Tír Chonaill dóibh.
MacGarvey numerous: Ulster generally, Sligo etc. Ir. Mac Gairbhith, possibly gar+bith, near + existence. Not, apparently, a first name. But see also Garvey.
Ó Gairbheith Garvey: líonmhar tríd an dtír, Connachta & tuaisceart Mumhan go sonrach. Bhí clanna éagsúla:(1) sa Dún, gaolmhar le Mac Aonghuis, (2) in Ó Nialláin, Ard Mhacha, agus (3) i Ráth Bhile, Ceatharlach, dream a bhain le h-Uí Cinnsealaigh. IF.
