Surname Dictionary

Grady fairly numerous: Galway-Mayo-Sligo etc. Ir. Ó Grádaigh, gráda = illustrious. This is a case where the better-known Grady has displaced the local name Gready, Ó Griada, which itself is a corruption of Mag Riada. O'Grady relates to N Munster. IF &MIF.
O Gráda O'Grady: an-líonmhar gach treo: sa Mhumhain agus i gConnachta go speisialta. Clann tábhachtach de chuid Dál gCais a bhí lonnaithe ag Cill na Súlach ar dtús. Thaobhaigh a dtaoiseach le Annraoi a h-Ocht, ghlac gradam ridire uaidh, agus lean an rath agus séan iad ó shoin i leith. Go dtí le déanaí, mhair taoiseach na clainne ag Coill Bhaile Eoghain, Luimneach, agus é i dteideal "An Grádach" a thabairt air féin. Aisteach go leor, thug craobh amháin díobh an sloinne O'Brady orthu féin sa 16 céad ach níor mhair sé sin, is cosúil. An bhrí: gráda = oirirc, cáiliúil. Féach Ó Greada, leis.
O'Grady Very numerous: all areas, especially Munster, Connacht and South East. Ir. Ó Grádaigh (noble). A sept of Thomond (Clare), which changed to Brady in part. Also a Mayo name which is properly Mag Riada. See also Grady. IF.
