| Guthrie | fairly numerous: mainly E Ulster, Clare. A Scottish name in Ulster but used as an anglicisation of Ó Lathaigh in Clare. In Irish, lathach means mud, slime, described by the Anglo-Irish word "guttery". Perhaps to get away from this connection, the Clare Laheys became honorary Scots!
