| Grenham | fairly rare: "Grenham" is linguistically English - there's a Grenham Bay in Kent in south-east England - but a large majority of those who bear the name are of Irish origin, and all originate in a small area of south Roscommon between the towns of Athlone and Ballinasloe, the parish of Moore.
There was a lot of migration from there to Boston and New York in the late 19th century and the name is now more plentiful in Massachussetts than anywhere else, with everyone there tracing their origins back to south Roscommon. Whether the surname came from an English soldier who went native in the 1700s or transposition from a native Gaelic name (Ó Gréacháin? Ó Grianáin?) is impossible to say. |
