Less than a third of the size of the current (2011) edition, this was the book I would have wanted as a working genealogist. Because of this, it was heavily focused on the Dublin repositories. It included two chapters dropped for reasons of space in subsequent editions: a guide to Church of Ireland registers in Dublin repositories and a full listing of the manuscripts of the Genealogical Office, later included in The Genealogical Office (Dublin, Irish Manuscripts Commission, 1999) and also online.

It was written in the attic on the wonderful Amstrad PCW 9512. The dot-matrix printer danced like a circus elephant and the entire house shook for weeks.
