Surname Dictionary

Ó Treasaigh Treacy, Tracey: an-líonmhar gach treo - san Oir-dheisceart go sonrach. Bhí trí chlann ar a laghad ann: (1) i Sliabh mBairche, Laois. (2) i nGaillimh thoir, gaolmhar leis na Maidínigh. (3) in iarthar Chorcaí mar a raibh siad nasctha le Ó Donnabháin. Thuit Seán Treacy (1895-1920) eadarnaí dána, i mBaile Átha Cliath le linn Chogadh na Saoirse. An bhrí: treasach = trodach.
Tracey numerous: all areas, especially Ulster, Midlands & South East. Ir. Ó Treasaigh, from treasach, warlike. There were septs in Galway, Cork, Laois & Fermanagh. These were dispersed at various times, but account for the present distribution. See Treacy. IF.
