Surname Dictionary

Mulholland Very numerous: Ulster generally, Louth, Sligo etc. Ir. Ó Maolchallann (devotee of Callann). Woulfe connects it with Caileann, New Year's Day, but this appears tenuous. There were septs in Limerick, Meath and Derry. The latter seem to have survived best. They were traditional keepers of the Bell of St Patrick. MIF, SGG.
Mullholland rare: Belfast etc. See Mulholland.
Ó Maolchallann Mulholland: an-líonmhar: Ulaidh, Lú, Sligeach & rl. Bhí an chlann ba thábhachtaí ag Loch Inse Uí Fhloinn, Doire agus iad ina gcoimeádaithe ar "Chlog Phádraig" a bhí orthu ghéilleadh san 18 céad. Ceapann de Bhulbh go mbaineann an t-ainm le Caileann - chéad lá na míosa, Eanair ach go h-áirithe. (Laidin: Calendae). Bhí clann eile i gCaonraí, Luimneach agus is cosúil go maireann siad mar Holland anois. IF, SGG.
