Surname Dictionary

Lanaghan Very rare: Down. See Lanigan.
Lanigan numerous: all areas, especially Kilkenny-Carlow-Waterford. Ir. Ó Lonagáin, perhaps from lon, a blackbird, (much admired by the early Irish because of its song). The name has always been associated with Kilkenny. MIF.
Lonegan Very rare: Newry (Down). See Lanigan.
Ó Lonagáin Lanigan: líonmhar ar fud na tíre ach i gCill Chainnigh-Ceatharlach-Port Lairge go príomha. Cill Chainnigh a bhfód dúchais, is cosúil. Tá an bhrí éiginnte ach déarfainn go mbaineann leis an ainm Lonán atá bunaithe ar an éan ab annsa le Gaeil, an lon dubh. Míniú eile ar fad ar Lanigan ná Ó Fhlannagáin - féidearthacht, mar a deirtear anois.
