Surname Dictionary

Lafferty fairly numerous: Galway-Mayo, Ulster etc. Ir. Ó Laithbheartaigh, an aspirated form of Flaherty, q.v. The family were important in Tyrone and Donegal in 16 cent. IF.
Laverty numerous: Ulster generally. Louth, Galway etc. Ir. Ó Laithbheartaigh (Laifeartaigh). sept of Donegal and Tyrone. Cognate with O'Flaherty but a distinct Ulster grouping. See also Lafferty. IF & SI.
MacClafferty Quite numerous: Donegal-Derry etc. Ir. Mac Fhlaithbheartaigh, princely, generous. Also Mac Laverty, q.v.
MacLaverty mod.nos: Antrim-Belfast. Ir. Mac Fhlaithbheartaigh, "lordly in action". Ulster and Scottish name. Compare O'Flaherty.
