Surname Dictionary

Keary Quite numerous: Galway etc. Ir. Mac Fhiachra and Ó Ciardha from ciar, black. Originally a branch of the Southern Uí Néill of N Leinster, Mac Fhiachra was a Galway sept. Also as Carey, q.v. SI & SGG.
Keery fairly numerous: Belfast, Lisburn etc. Ir. Ó Ciardha, ciar, dark (hair etc). See also Keary and Carey.
