Surname Dictionary

Hallinan fairly numerous: Munster, Connacht etc. Ir. Ó h-Ailgheanáin, áilghean, gentle, possibly. Generally regarded as a Munster name, its occurrence in Galway-Mayo and even Donegal, suggests a separate origin there. In Cork, tradition has it that 'Ó hAlanáin' became 'Allen'. MIF & SGG.
Halnon rare: Wexford etc. Probably Hallinan, q.v.
