Grogan numerous: all areas except Cork. Ir. Ó Gruagáin, perhaps from gruagach, a champion. They were erenaghs in Elphin (Roscommon), now greatly dispersed. The form Groogan occurs in Ulster. MIF & SGG.
Grugan rare: Tyrone. See Grogan.
Ó Gruagáin Grogan: líonmhar tríd an dtír. Bhí an chlann bhunaidh ina n-airchinnigh in Ail Finn ach scaipeadh iad go luath (sa 15 céad, is cosúil). Tá Groogan agus Grugan i nDoire - clann faoi leith, déarfainn. Fréamh: grúg = fearg, ceaptar. MIF.
