Surname Dictionary

Fenton numerous: Munster, E Ulster and generally. Ir. Ó Fiannachta (fionn, fair). A branch of Síol Muireadhaigh (Galway-Roscommon). This usually appears as Finnerty in Connacht and as Fenton in Limerick-Kerry. In the north and east, the name is probably English - a common toponymic there. MIF & DOS.
Finnerty numerous: Galway-Mayo-Roscommon and generally. Ir. Ó Fionnachta, a sept of Síol Muireadhaigh (O'Connors etc). They resided along the River Suck. There was (and is) another family in Kerry. Woulfe's derivation of fionn+sneachta (snow) is accepted. The name appears as Fenton in Munster.MIF.
