Colonial Scots-Irish Immigrants:

The Irish Records

PRONI

By Kyle J. Betit

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) holds the most extensive collection of genealogical records for Northern Ireland counties. The PRONI also collects some records for the other three Ulster counties. Church records, estate papers, and taxation records are just some of the kinds of records held by the PRONI.

The PRONI maintains a "Card Index to Names" that should be checked when tracing any ancestor from Ulster. It indexes persons listed in a wide variety of records, such as rent rolls, leases, pedigrees, church records, and private papers. The card index was filmed several times for the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, most recently in 1990. In the FHL Catalog, the index is catalogued under the subject heading Ireland -- Public Records.
